Groovy Checkerboard is a modern scrap quilt built around simple blocks, strong value contrast, and lots of easy, repetitive sewing. The checkerboard layout alternates light and dark fabrics, while solid and four-patch centers add bright pops of color throughout the quilt.

Designed with scraps in mind, Groovy Checkerboard makes good use of leftover strips, small pieces, and even the tiny scraps that tend to accumulate from other projects. The sample quilt uses a controlled palette of soft blues with warm, bright centers, but the design works just as well with a completely scrappy mix.

Straightforward construction and plenty of chain piecing make this an approachable, satisfying quilt to sew. The solid and four-patch centers can also be rearranged to create different secondary designs, giving you plenty of room to play with the scraps you already have.
