Modern tessellating quilt design

Shifting Lines is a modern quilt design built on clean geometry and subtle visual movement. Block edges are intentionally softened, creating an all-over texture that feels layered and fluid—especially when viewed from a distance. The piecing is simple and satisfying, with a strong vertical rhythm that’s well suited to chain piecing and block-based construction.

The pattern includes multiple sizes and flexible layout options: make it as a classic two-color quilt, use one consistent background with different accent colors (as in the sample), or assign a unique color pair to each column. Seam spinning is used throughout to reduce bulk and help the blocks nest neatly during assembly—making the quilt top flatter and easier to quilt.

This is a great project for confident beginners who enjoy a bit of pressing strategy and the kind of design that comes together cleanly but looks more complex than it is. Straight-line quilting works beautifully here, especially if you want to echo the vertical flow of the design.
